Alfalfa, which is the foremost among roughage, which is one of the most important needs of animal husbandry, is known as the queen of feed crops. It has a high adaptability ability and there are varieties spread from the hottest regions to arid regions. It is a perennial and can live for 4-30 years by resisting drought and frost with the help of its strong and deep roots.

It is a forage plant with important features such as increasing soil fertility and being a good honey extract plant. The sainfoin, which is rich in protein (17%), has an important place in artificial pasture mixes in arid conditions and grows best in temperate climates, it is drought and cold resistant, very contented in terms of soil requirements, it can grow in poor, dry and calcareous soils. The best planting time is early spring, and in temperate regions planting can also be done in autumn.

It is a one-year vetch resistant to cold and drought, and it is the best forage legume plant that can withstand winter in Eastern and Central Anatolian conditions. It is especially recommended in barren areas. Since Hungarian vetch develops very poorly in our coastal regions, common vetch or hairy vetch are preferred instead of Hungarian vetch.

In general, semi-arid regions with an annual precipitation of 300-500 mm are natural growing areas, but they grow well in humid and cool places and give abundant grass products. Since it is not very resistant to cold, it is not planted in every region for winter. High yields are obtained in deep, calcareous, clayey and fertile soils.
